The term “no-design” was coined in the 1980s by the product designer Jasper Morrison.
No-design objects are the result of sophisticated product design, yet give little indication of their creative value. They are instead modelled on practical, understated objects which seem familiar and indispensable, but of which one is barely aware when using them. No-design includes plain designs such as the “Chair” by Jasper Morrison, or objects by Mondo. Everyday objects of banal design are occasionally also included under this term.
